Winter outfit idea: taupe & navy
Happy fashion, freezing Friday, all! Welcome to my winter outfit idea: taupe and navy.
I want to discuss color combinations for a winter outfit idea in an effort to give you some ideas from your wardrobes.
The color taupe has been a favorite of mine for a long time…but before I met with a color specialist, I typically wore taupe with black.
For some reason, when I first tried taupe with navy, it was like a light came on in my head…because I liked it with navy way better than black.
So, now I wear it with navy pants and with my jeans…and still love the color.
As with all colors, you are about to see that many brands rename taupe to something else.
I find a true taupe to be a “just right” combination of gray and brown with not too much of either in the mix.
I like to wear it and also like to paint it on my walls…and it is perfectly normal to see your wardrobe colors also become your home decor preferences.
For today’s winter outfit idea, let’s look at taupe.
WINTER OUTFIT IDEA: MY OUTFIT
I wore this outfit earlier in the week to run errands…in fact, I wore it for that jelly pedicure I discussed yesterday.
The poncho is an old purchase at
I still love the design of it with the faux leather trim and the heavy knit.I love my new Chico’s sweater in English cream underneath…it is on sale and right now there are several sizes available
This is the Chico’s Caviar Trim V-Neck Pullover and I also have it in Enchanted Forest Green.
I have worn both often in my fall and winter outfits.
I am a fan of these navy Talbots Out & About Seamed Bootcut Pants …and I own them in both navy and black.
And I showed you the shoes recently….the Easy Spirit EXCLAIM COLD WEATHER BOOTIES …so warm and cozy.
Now, let’s look at some taupe garments on the market…..
WINTER OUTFIT IDEA: TAUPE
My winter outfit idea of wearing taupe & navy can be accomplished in many ways from casual to dressy.
Spanx calls their version of taupe…SMOKE.
They have several garments in smoke, but I am highlighting my two favorites.
This is the SPANX AirEssentials Half Zip top in smoke…and I still find this collection one of the best winter fabrics on the market.
This blazer is on a wish list for me because it could be worn at least three seasons of the year.
This is the SPANX Carefree Crepe Blazer in smoke and it is on sale…though smoke is the one color that cannot be returned.
I see it in my head with my dark wash jeans.
Chico’s is the only brand here that calls this color, taupe!
The Cashmere Bateau Neck Sweater is beautiful and ON SALE.
Everlane calls the color, clay.
I included this top because it is so good as a layering piece with your navy garments.
It is The Box-Cut Tee In Essential Cotton…only $30…and available in 20 colors!
Here is another great layering piece that can be worn more than one season.
NYDJ calls this color dark wood.
This is the Gabrielle Short Sleeve Blouse…and use the code JANUARY to save on the top. It comes in five options.
I typically look at a winter outfit idea with layering in mind since I live in Texas. Weather can change significantly within one day’s time.
This year has been fun to wear sweaters and coats more…love mixing it up.
I plan to give you Ideas with color combinations, so stay tuned for more! If there are color combinations you would like me to tackle….let me know.
Thank you for being here and hopefully I will see you tomorrow…until then….
STAY WARM & KEEP SMILING!

I, too, love the color taupe. And thank you for offering some new ideas for winter weather. It is inspiring to see your choices. I have several of the Everlane box cut tees and just love them because they are well made and the design is such that the tee doesn’t pull around my waist but just drapes nicely.
You look great! I love the combo of taupe and navy, which is unusual enough to hit my interesting adjective. Athleta has some navy leggings with a taupe stripe on the side, and I bought them and the matching taupe sweatshirt. I’d love to see you work with brown (especially darker browns like luggage and chocolate) with navy. I love black and brown, but could use some tips switching it out with navy.
Thanks for sharing on the tees, Mary!
I wear brown and navy often so will share an outfit or two soon. Happy Friday!
Navy is my basic color, but I have not thought about putting it with taupe. You look great in the outfit.
Thanks Marcia…they pair really well together.
Taupe is a difficult color when seen online because it can lean cool or warm and it’s hard to tell the difference, even in stores in person. I really appreciate when you describe any color in terms of cool or warm for your audience….so helpful. I’d like to see what can be combined with corals or burgundy’s or mustards or warm blush pinks.
Thanks for the post today. Navy and taupe are a great duet.
Thanks Kay…when I am showing you what I wear, typically it is for warm palettes. The taupes I lean toward are best described as a combination of the elephant gray and brown that are both in my autumn palette. I agree that often it is difficult to see what taupe is online.. you are right that there are cool and warm versions. I do have burgundy and mustard in my wardrobe, and I will see if I can find examples for you of corals and warm blush pink combinations.
It is a combination that I really enjoy and believe can be quite casual chic.
That’s a great combination on you. I always enjoy seeing what you combine from you closet. I’ve always been a fan of taupe and I used to wear it a lot with black too. Taupe is tricky for me since it isn’t included in my palette. Warm beige is in my palette as well as warm gray which is probably the same as elephant gray. I wear a lot of beige but find warm gray is too cool next to my face. I do wear warm gray and taupe pants and shoes and find they work with many colors in my palette like coral, orange, red, cranberry, teal (especially deep teal), some warm greens and of course cream. Both gray and taupe are elegant paired with cream.
Thanks for mentioning these other colors that work for you, Kathie. It will help others as well.
Taupe is not on my color palette so would have to be in pants with navy on top. Navy is my neutral go to color. Perhaps a column of color in navy with the taupe blazer, navy Suede booties and silver hoop earrings. That would be very dressy for me but at 5’1” it would make me look taller. Loves your outfit on you!
Thanks Sydney. I also have taupe pants that I wear with navy.., thanks for mentioning that!
Although taupe is a color that I find hard to wear because I look better in cooler colors, I have always thought that the combination of taupe & navy looks very sophisticated. Years ago, I had a pair of taupe pants & often wore them with a navy or black top. I always find the color names interesting. I was especially intrigued with the Everlane “clay”. Most things that I have seen labeled as clay had a slight tint of orange to them.
I know, Becky, many times I wonder how color names came about. Every now and then I come across one that makes no sense!
I don’t own a poncho or anything taupe but may have to check and see if this could be a new look for me. Pam you always look great in ponchos and ruanas. Hoping for a Texas win!!!
Hook’em Horns…but I must say I love the players on the Ohio State Team! Hope it’s a good game.
